The EMPEROR, Key IV, Major Arcana
by Peggy Firth, Certified Tarot Master

(above) The Emperor of the Robin Wood Tarot Deck
The Emperor represents the active masculine principle which implies authority and paternity. He is the father, the earthly lawyer who rules with knowledge and personal experience. He is also rational, left brain, order and structure to ground and direct us.
First impressions portray the Emperor as a wise old man within the firmament of hell. The orange sky with fires burning above mountains of rock behind the Emperor’s throne implies strength and an inner fire.
A massive throne of stone flanked with four ram heads that connect us with the zodiacal sign of aries. Ares, the ancient god of fertility and war, was honored for his passion, intense reactions and physical action.
The Emperor holds an orb in his left hand, symbol of sovereignty and justice. The scepter in his right resembling an ankh is the Egyptian symbol of enduring life and sacred male principles. Beneath his red robe he wears the full armament of battle. His gold crown with five large stones in red and white are the main colors of the ingredients of alchemy.
The upright Emperor challenges the querent to make decision(s) with parental authority. Needs and desires should require more organization and stability with on-going stewardship.
Perhaps too much authority and masculine ideals should be tempered with a softer approach.
The Robin Wood deck image is more friendly image of the Emperor and reminds me of Father Christmas. The traditional ornaments of royalty are shown with more detail. The crown of the traditional Rider Waite deck is replaced with laurel leaves which symbolize honor and achievement. A purple robe lined with gold coins and lined with ermine symbolize nobility and authority.
Reversed Emperor challenges the querent to become more assertive.
The querent should get in touch or activate their masculine side and take charge of the situation.
A confident approach is required.
Key words: Logical and linear thinking, father, stability, structure, justice, and achievement.
