Can a Non-Psychic Successfully Read for Others?

by Peggy Firth, Certified Tarot Master

Temperance, Major Arcana 14(L) Temperance, a Major Arcana card number 14, indicates the need to create good intentions with firmness and with our highest principles. Balance, control, integrity and strength are called for. This card also calls for the querent to see their challenges from a higher perspective and not get caught up in blatant reaction as the ego is prone to do.

Many tarot readers doubt their ability to successfully devine the cards and those who do read for others often wonder if their readings are accurate. Since I am not psychic I have pondered this question over the years. However, after two decades of practice I have come to the conclusion that every reading is perfect.

The tarot decks I have grown up with closely follow the traditional Rider Waite imagery which is full of symbolism, numerology and astrology. All of these layers of imagery seem to assist the reader in many ways, according to their interests in the occult and knowledge of the tarot. The wisdom of the tarot lies in its ability to stimulate correct responses to questions. I feel that the subconscious mind is immediately drawn to the answers that each card contains. I often am attracted to one symbol within each card or see patterns that a spread may contain. Spreads that show similar colors, suits or people often determine which direction to take a reading. For example, lots of red within a spread may indicate action and liveliness. Darker colors throughout a spread indicate just the opposite. I trust my very first impression, even when I am familiar with the traditional meaning of a card.

The non-psychic reader who takes the time to learn the tarot is generally one who possesses interest in the human condition and is able to articulate their impressions and feelings. I find that a sensitivity to another’s plight is also very helpful. Some folks are, by nature, able to listen and offer good common sense advice. It’s also good to know that life’s stresses are lifted as much as 50% when they are shared. Tarot, as a tool, may only indicate broad indicators of a situation, challenge or possible future.

I have been told that when a querent seeks a reading they have already begun to address and try to solve whatever situation they seek answers for. This seems to hold true for psychologists and counselors across the board. Those who live bleak lives and never seek help may never rise above their state of mind or situation.

Queen of CupsOften a good reader will encounter a problem with a reading and not understand how to interpret the cards which seem to point to other conditions/situations. This may occur if the client is unable to address a deeper issue. Since this is a common occurrence I often ask lots of questions in an attempt to resolve such issues. It also allows the querent to begin understand and face their issues. Some readers are on the spiritual path or have an interest in counseling which facilitates a reading. However, I have been told that as readers we do not offer advice. The best we can do is ask, “have you considered…..?”

Every reading is perfect, even those given in the early days before we felt ready to read for others. Over time we may alter our interpretations and add to the knowledge of the tarot. The tarot is also evolving and expanding as professionals use the cards to tap into their subconscious mind. New books and training materials explore new and expansive ways to interpret the cards.

(R) The Queen of Chalices or Cups image shows the mature woman who has experienced all phases of emotion and emerges triumphant in life. As she holds the chalice she considers the meaning behind events and life situations. As readers we know that the answer(s) are contained within the chalice and that they will be as positive as the queen who holds it.
